Beneficial effect of gelatin on iron gall ink corrosion

چکیده
Abstract Iron gall Inks corrosion causes paper degradation (browning, embrittlement) and treatments were developed to tackle this issue. They often include resizing with gelatin reinforce the its cellulosic fibers (of diameter approx. 10 µm). This work aimed at measuring distribution of ink components scale individual so as give a better understanding impact (re-)sizing on iron corrosion. For purpose, scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) was used Canadian light source synchrotron (CLS, Saskatoon). technique combines nano-scale mapping (resolution 30 nm) near edge absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) analysis. Fe L-edge measurements enabled map locate iron(II) iron(III) rich areas. N K-edge measurement made it possible distribution. C allowed discrimination cellulose, gallic acid, precipitate gelatin. Three studied: an inked fiber no size, sized that afterwards sprayed Analysis ingredients indicated lower amount inside treated fiber, which may explain beneficial effect .

15 صفحه اولEmission of reactive oxygen species during degradation of iron gall ink
Iron gall inks are characterised by high contents of acids and transition metals, promoting degradation of cellulose due to hydrolysis and oxidation, respectively. Their chemical interaction with the environment is not well understood, especially in view of emissions of degradation products which could lead to spread of degradation processes. In order to study the emissions, we employed gas chr...

متن کاملTemperature Effects on Iron Corrosion
Temperature is an often overlooked water quality parameter that may influence corrosion of iron pipes in drinking water distribution systems. This study examined corrosion of cast iron samples in an aerobic, microbially stable water at different constant temperatures (5, 20, and 25°C) as well as in waters where the temperature continuously cycled (17.5 – 23°C and 5 – 20°C). The composition and ...
